President Trump Fires Register of Copyrights After Librarian of Congress

He appointed a DOJ official to head the Library of Congress for now.

President Donald Trump’s administration terminated the Register of Copyrights Shira Perlmutter, the head of the U.S. Copyright Office. This firing came on the heels of the termination of the Librarian of Congress, who appointed the register. The office of the Register of Copyrights issued a report outlining concerns about copyrighted works being used to train artificial intelligence the day before she was fired.

The Justice Department announced that President Trump appointed Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche to be the acting librarian of Congress.

Some officials have questioned the administration’s actions citing the separation of the executive and legislative branch powers. Congressman Joe Morelle of New York and Senator Alex Padilla of California issued a statement concerning the appointment, saying, “The President of the United States has no authority to appoint an acting Librarian of Congress or terminate the Register of Copyrights.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For President Trump and members of his administration to be prudent in their actions and mindful of the Executive Branch’s authority.
  • For members of Congress and the federal judiciary as they seek to determine the appropriate separation of powers.
